Had just returned to my stand from helping my Dad track and field dress his deer. At about 4:00, he came in to feed. As soon as I saw 4 on one side, I took the shot!

Rifle kill from this year. Yes it’s not huge, and really don’t care. The memory behind this buck is the trophy to me. Before I tell you the story of the memory with this deer I will explain the two pictures with the bucks in them. The first pic is the “trophy” i shot two years ago, the others are from this year. This buck is a small 8 point. He is roughly 16 inches wide and his main beams are probably 6 inches long. His tines are tall for how small the rack is.

The memory and story behind this buck is my son and my neighbor boy decided last year that we were going to set up “deer camp” in the middle of what I would probably call one of the most desolate big woods country in the continental 48. This is the Upper Penninsula of Michigan. So we did just that, set a tent up with a barrel stove, cots, food for breakfast, lunch and dinners and our rifles. We have snow, and the first night was 30 to 40 mile and hour winds that continued well into opening day. The next two nights got into the teens and the last night was 7 degrees out. It was cold.

Opening afternoon, knowing I don’t have a lot of time to hunt this year because of work, figured I would see what I could pull out of the woods. Well at 4:55 pm this buck came running in behind a doe. The doe ran into the bait pile panting, the buck came grunting. I will admit I thought this buck was bigger than he was and the ground shrinkage was more than I thought.

After the shot I went to get the boys to help track and teach them how to fit a deer. Needless to say they loved it and we can’t wait to do this next year.

I will let the pictures tell the rest of the story.

My friend was 500 yards away and took a poor shot. This guy came through the swamp to a scrape I was sitting in. Not more than 30 seconds after my friend shot, it showed 25 yards in front me. Shot with a 12 gauge slug.
