Raining heavy that morning and knew it would continue all day per the report. Talking over coffee and Donuts with my uncle before we left for the hunt we discussed shot preference with how much it was raining if infact we had a shooter buck present himself. Had my regular visitor button buck who’s mama recently kicked him away days earlier on the pile eating and looking off to the left pretty regularly where I had noticed a nice scrape earlier in the week. All a sudden he walks in from that direction and as he got closer he presented a shot where he was quartering towards me and I figured if I took out the front shoulder and through some vitals I could possibly drop him on the spot. We’ll not so lucky and after the shot he took off back where he came and I lost site of the direction he went. I could not afford to give it time to wait and track with the steady rain so I got down and started looking for some blood but no luck as it was washing away as soon as it hit the ground. I did some zig zagging myself before I went to grab my uncle. We both did the same and went all over the place for hundreds of yards and finally after a prayer to one of my hunting gods (my grandfather) we started over back at the shot and went another way where I was soon guided in the right direction and stumbled upon him. During that 90 Mims or so of tracking and following deer runs my heart was sunk and sick to my stomach at losing this deer!! It was truly like winning the lotto walking up on him through the thick woods of planted Jack pine without a single drop of blood the entire way. I could not believe my prayer was answered. I was successful to go through the shoulder exactly as planned and caught a lung just not so successful to drop him on spot. He actually made it about 150 yards.
