I had been watching this buck for about a month and could tell he’d made a huge jump in growth since last season. I only had one daytime photo of him, but with a cold front moving in, I knew conditions were right for deer movement.
That evening, I caught sight of his tines coming through the woods and knew immediately it was him. He has double drop tines off one main beam, which makes him truly unique. He stepped to the edge of the field, checked a scrape, and worked the tree aggressively.
I expected him to follow the same path as other deer for a 25-yard shot, but like most mature bucks, he did the opposite. He looped around a bush and started walking perpendicular to me, heading out of range. I took the shot at 42 yards, watched him drop his head, and run through the field into the woods, where he went down about 50 yards from the shot.
His gross score is 173 3/8.
