First couple morning hunts of the year were slow, but my trail cam had been showing toms passing through between noon and 5 for the last few days prior. on the afternoon of the second day i set up about halfway down a fence row that runs through the middle of an abandoned pasture just off of the cut corn field, but i had the field to my back thinking they’d come up out of the river bottom on the opposite side of the pasture. i set up my decoys and did some occasional yelps with the mouth call every 10 or 15 minutes. 45 minutes into the hunt, i had a hunch to take a look behind me and caught a tom scaling the edge of the pasture at 25 yards. he got behind an old manger which gave me time to flip my gun around to shoot him right handed (i’m lefty). i poked my barrel through the fence and waited for him to pop out from behind the manger. sure enough he popped his head out and down he went. Not sure on weight but he was massive. 10” beard and 1 1/8” pearl spurs
