For four seasons, Travis and his son Dominic chased the dream of doubling up on spring gobblers together. Since Dominic first picked up a shotgun at 8 years old, the woods had handed them more heartbreak than success — close calls, missed chances, and long mornings wondering if their moment would ever come.
But early Thursday morning, everything changed.
Three longbeards stormed into range, closing the distance to just 12 yards. They attacked the Jake decoy and climbed onto the hen decoy as the plan unfolded perfectly in front of them. In a moment they’ll never forget, Dominic’s tom was standing on top of the decoy when the shots rang out.
After four years of patience, persistence, and bitter disappointment, the victory tasted that much sweeter.
And somehow, the young man still made it to school on time.
