Dax, age 11 — Oceana County 🦌
Dax’s youth hunt started Saturday afternoon with Mom. It was HOT, and throughout the evening we saw a fawn, a spike and a 4 point. Dax chose to pass on all of them and patiently wait. Just before dark we could hear something bigger coming, but unfortunately ran out of shooting light.
Sunday morning we headed back out together under the stars with finally some cool weather. After two hours without seeing a single deer, Dax was starting to get discouraged. I convinced him to sit just a little longer and give the deer a chance to get on their feet.
Not even five minutes later, a beautiful 8 point stepped out about 50 yards away.
Dax gave the perfect buck grunt, shouldered his .270 and made an incredible shot—heart, both lungs and liver. 🦌
I’ll never forget the excitement on his face afterward. Watching his patience from the night before pay off and getting to experience that moment together made this a hunt I’ll always treasure.
And somehow it gets even better—his brother Dean harvested an 8 point the morning before, and their racks look so similar we’ve joked that maybe the bucks were brothers too. Two brothers, two 8 points, one unforgettable Michigan Youth Hunt weekend. 🧡🦌
