What a night. I’ll start off by saying I know this is a small buck. It’s actually the smallest buck I’ve ever shot. But besides my first buck that I got with my grandpa, this is probably the most memorable one.

Almost 2 years ago I went to my girlfriend’s dad, who is an awesome woodworker, and said “we should make some bows.” And that’s pretty much where all of this started. I had my dad get us a chunk of hickory and we started at it. We cut it into strips, glued the handles on, I cut the shapes out on the bandsaw, did some sanding… and then I never got back to mine 😂

Marc finished his and I kept telling him I’d get around to finishing mine. Well, that never happened 😂 So eventually he did the rest of it for me, and it’s probably a good thing because he’s so damn talented it’s unreal. He’s built probably 10 bows since then, but this bow right here is the second one we (he) ever built. And it turned out awesome.

I shot it a ton last season but never really committed to hunting with it. This summer I shot every chance I could get and finally got to the point where I felt really comfortable with it. So I decided to hang up the compound and make this my full time bow.

Going into the season I told myself I was going to keep an open mind. The first buck that came into range and gave me a good, ethical shot, I was going to take it.

Yesterday morning I had 2 really nice 8 points at about 35 yards, but I couldn’t get them to come any closer. Fast forward to tonight and this guy came in straight downwind from me at 15 yards. I pulled back, let it fly, and the rest is history. He ran about 70 yards and piled up.

Shooting a deer with a traditional bow is something I honestly never thought I’d do. Shooting one with a homemade traditional bow is something I REALLY never thought I’d do. But I can tell you one thing… I’m hooked.
