Finally got it done. My first archery buck, and this one came with quite the story.
I lost a close friend earlier this year, and the day he passed, a tiny fawn barely old enough to walk ran across the road in front of me while I was talking to him. Since then, I’ve had numerous unusually close encounters with fawns, and I’ve come to find a little comfort in them.
Saturday afternoon I climbed into my stand and, missing him a little extra, asked him to come hunt with me and told him if he did, to make it obvious.
Not long after, a little doe fawn came in and bedded down near my stand for over two hours. When a group of does finally bumped her up around 6:25, I watched her disappear into the brush feeling pretty emotional and honestly a little disappointed.
Then I heard a twig snap.
I turned around and there stood “Goofy,” about 10 yards behind me with my bow hanging on the opposite side of the tree.
He wasn’t originally on the shooter list, but after a long, disappointing season last year and an emotion-filled evening in the woods, I decided if he gave me the opportunity, I was taking it.
He eventually did — 35 yards.
14 points later, I had my first archery buck!
After trying so hard and coming up empty last year, finally getting it done felt pretty dang good. But getting to do it on a night when I had asked an old friend to sit with me made this one a hunt I’ll remember for a long, long time."
