So much excitement and disbelief tonight, this buck has been on my mind every day since I first got him on camera at the beginning of October. I’ve been moving cameras all over the property trying to find him in the daylight, every picture has been in the middle of the night. I started to think I’d never set eyes on him. On the second day of gun season I bumped him bedded with a doe mid day while moving cameras and decided to back out instead of going after him. Last week I found many fresh rubs along a doe bedding area so I hung a cam Saturday. Tonight I saw a great opportunity with the wind and slid in with just my chair and shooting sticks. I had some does start moving through and seconds after I heard a branch shaking behind me. To my surprise I saw a large deer making his way up the edge freshening scrapes 60yds behind me. I knew it was a good buck by the body size and a flash of antlers in the branches, when he stopped at 50 yards I decided to take the quartering to shot. I felt good about the shot and once I found the blood trail I knew it was over. After roughly a 75yd track with my dad and the landowner I finally saw him in front of me. Walking up and seeing it was “The Big 10” my brother and I had been after was unreal. This has been a tough season and tonight reminded me why all the hard work and time is worth it.
