I got out to my stand at 1pm and saw a couple of does. After they walked off I used my illusion black rack and grunt call and did blind calling every 20 minutes. He ran by me once chasing a doe at about 430 and I couldn’t get my rifle fast enough and he was growling at her. So I quickly grabbed my rack and my grunt call and I started rattling hard for 30 seconds roughly and grunted. Not a minute later I heard the doe coming with him doing tending grunts right behind her. I grabbed my rifle and scoped him out to check his rack because I’m a big fan of letting them go if there not mature. He was making deep guttural grunts so I knew he was mature and I got a glimpse of one side of his rack. I followed him in scope and I had my cross hairs just in front of his shoulder, I was aiming for a heart shot. I followed him and when I saw an opening in my scope I pulled the trigger. I caught him in the neck and the exit hole was roughly on the other side close to the heart. When I pulled the trigger he face planted into the dirt. I was so excited and I still didn’t have the shakes or anything because it all happened so fast. I didn’t even have time to get nervous. I still didn’t know the size of the rack. So I got down and walked over to him and when I turned his rack over I was in complete shock. Biggest buck to date with my rifle and bow combined. I haven’t shot a buck in 4 years because so have passed up the little ones. So after shooting him I sprinted a half mile to get my grandpa and it was really exciting to have my grandpa up there with me when I got my buck. He taught me how to hunt and it was a special moment that I’ll always have.
