Woke up this morning, feeling discouraged and a little groggy, almost talked myself out of hunting. But I got up and As I was getting ready, I grabbed my grandfathers hat and the necklace containing some of his ashes. Living by his saying “Halloween is the day to be hunting.” I gathered my gear and jumped in the truck.
I walked into the field a little later than usual, got into my saddle and finally situated. The morning started slower than most, decided to have a talk with grandpa. Asked him to watch over me and to ensure I had a safe hunt, asked him to maybe send me a little luck. Very shortly after I hear a deer walking behind me, as I turn, I see this beautiful 11 point making his way towards me at a fast pace. I wasn’t able to get situated fast enough and had to watch him walk away. When he was out of sight I picked up the antlers and started a short rattling sequence followed by a snort wheeze. Instantly I seen him making a B line straight towards me, he hoped the fence in search of a fight. As I sit there shaking with buck fever I noticed he wasn’t going to close the gap that I would’ve wanted, I quickly ranged him, drew my bow and got anchored. When he stepped in the opening I gave the old “mehh” stopping him long enough to touch off the release. The arrow flew true, double lunging him and having him expire only 60 yards from the shot sight. After losing my hunting buddy, I dedicated a single arrow to him, I told him I’d get that buck and that arrow wouldn’t be shot until then.
The memories and the roller coaster of emotions on this hunt and recovery is something I’ll always hold onto and cherish. Beyond happy to have had my father there for this recovery.
This ones for you grandpa, thank you for sending me some luck today.
