Had a doe come busting down a trail next to my blind at 7:57 AM, she cut left in front of me and went down into the swamp. Less than a minute later, the spike came right on her path. I was able to get him to stop in front of me with a couple quick whistles, and took the shot. He ended up about 150 yards up field from me. I went up to check him and make sure he was down, and pull him up next to a little spruce so I knew where he would be later. As I turn to go back to my blind, my dad texted me that his cousin had seen “one with horns” following a doe. I thought that was weird, since he was only a spike, but then I looked up and saw the 8 pt coming down the trail towards the field. I dropped to my knee, found him in the scope, and when he paused at the edge of the woods facing straight on to me, I took a shot at his chest knowing it would be the only one I got, and let one fly from 140 yds. I hit him, but he took off down into the swamp, so I called my dad to bring a shotgun. When we walked up on him, he jumped up one last time so my dad took a shot with the 12 gauge to knock him down. Kind of cool because 2 pellets lodged in his left main beam, but it didn’t break off, so we will always have proof of the story!
