I wasn’t planning on going out hunting this particular night, in fact, we were scheduled to go to my cousins birthday party. I decided on a whim to sit in the same spot I had gotten my previous 9 point the year before. About 45 minutes before dark, I caught movement out of the corner of my right eye and saw this guy coming though the field at a pretty good clip. He was about 50 yards out and I wanted him to stop so I could get a good shot. I yelled “hey” and he put on the brakes. When I shot, he didn’t react at all, no jump, no ducking down, not a flinch, he just took off. I was sure I missed him. I texted my husband and told him that I was sure I just missed a big one, but I’d go out into the field in about 15 minutes to look for any sign that I’d hit him. After looking for about 15 minutes and nearly giving up, I found the tiniest little speck of what looked like lung tissue. From there, I followed the most scant blood trail I had ever seen into the swamp. From there, the trail picked up significantly. We found him about 75 yards from where I shot, with a perfect shot to the lungs. He’s a 9 point and the biggest buck I’ve gotten to date. This guy got the last laugh because a couple days later I was covered in poison ivy from touching his antlers which were covered in pieces of bark and plant material.
