Well Ethan our 5 year old did it. He really wanted to turkey hunt this year and was super pumped to hit the woods after mom and dad doubled together last weekend on opening day. Ethan has never shot a gun, he’s still a little too small for that. He is pretty darn good at shooting the crossbow though! Mom tagged along on this hunt, we needed all the luck we could get and Mom is quite the lucky charm!! Heard some gobbling off the roost and then it got quiet for a bit. The spot we were in the birds typically show up an hour or so after light and today was no different. Next thing we knew there were 2 hens in the field on opposite sides of us, heard a gobble looked over and here came the Tom. He came in at a nice pace and marched right in to the decoys. Ethans shot was spot on after a long and patient time aiming and asking me a few times if he can shoot now, he finally pulled the trigger and the rest is history! Ethans Tom was an absolute giant bird weighing 26.96lbs. Having and 11” paint brush beard and some pretty solid 1” spurs. Ethan is one happy young man and next time you see him face to face he might tell you 20 times that he shot a giant Tom! Thankful for the Michigan mentored youth hunt and I do believe I now have a lifelong hunting partner.
