This is my first year bow hunting and 4th year dear hunting. I got a Mathew missions range from the local beckers archery in Fowler mi. They hooked me up with everything I needed as I walked in knowing nothing about archery but eager to hunt this years bow season. After a few weeks of practice I was ready to hit the woods. The first few week of deer season were interesting to say the least. My first live shot was on a wood chuck out of my stand at 29 yards! I had some flaws in between that and shooting this buck. They included missing a spooky doe that ducked really good on me. As well as a lost buck. This 11 point was insanely unexpected. To begin, I don’t like using trail cams or anything, I enjoy the excitement of seeing brand new things every hunt. On Saturday the 18th I planned on doing an evening duck hunt for the opener but could not for the life of me find my calls. So I was convinced to at least spend my time sitting in a stand. I had many to choose from and decided to sit a double stand with my boyfriend. We sat for 2 hours before light and had seen a few deer but nothing close. It was 720 when I heard movement along the corn field we were next to and I decided to stand up and get ready. I knew I had limited time and the light was going fast! It felt like forever until this deer got to where I could see it… and expecting doe, I was wrong. I had see some white antlers moving around behind a tree that was somewhat blocking my view. The gap I had to shoot was also the first and only gap I had of whatever was coming in. So after what felt like forever to get a good view, I had about 10 second to see what it was and to be ready for my shot. He came into view and ended up courtering me at 15 yards. I was shook.. literally! Shaking the entire tree!! I triple checked my sights and aim, hand placement and BOOM! He spinned around and booked it into the corn. We heard him run and make a ruckus. I had thought I heard him crash or at the minimum not make it all the way through the field. So we waited an hour and had the help of a neighbor to track. We found my arrow 10 yards away from where I shot… well half an arrow, with really good blood! As we continued.. it was specks of blood. Not looking so good. There was a couple little dots on the corn leaves every 10 feet or so and I was so worried. After about 45 or 50 yards the corn was all tumbled over and my two helpers stood to the side and let me lead the way to see this beautiful buck. I’m so grateful for the help of all the neighbors we have in this little community!
