Our ladder stand is on a ridge that overlooks a thick bedding area. It sits on the edge of the woods so we can also see out into a cut corn field.
About an hour before dark we see doe transitioning out of the thicket into the corn field. After watching the doe feed for 10 minutes out steps a nice 10 point. He’s 225 yards away and was not getting any closer.
He was feeding down in a valley so we decided to get down and see if we could get a closer shot.
Using the terrain to our advantage we army crawled to get within 175 yards. We watched him for another 5 minutes waiting for a broadside shot. Lying prone Jackson felt confident enough to take the shot. He squeezed the trigger and the buck mule kicked. Jackson made a perfect heart shot and the deer expired after 50 yards.
He has put a lot of time and effort from the habitat work to shooting his bow and gun. Sometimes it doesn’t work out how you want it to but tonight it did. Proud dad moment.
