24 hours later, I’m still processing what took place yesterday. It was a day that my brother and I will never forget. Year after year he has picked me up on opening day of gun season since we hunt the same area. It’s always been small talk and good luck wishes in the field and then we go our separate ways to our tree stands.
Walking into the woods yesterday was so quiet, and perfect with the light of the moon, allowing us to sneak in without disturbing any critters. Within minutes of getting settled into my stand I had several deer coming in for a drink at the creek behind me. I watched several deer once daylight hit. I saw my first buck come in alone, while listening to him grunt the whole way through the woods. While breathing and settling my nerves I decided to take my shot, and there he laid! Little did I know my brother shot a nice buck 20 seconds before me. Our BBD texts to each other were confusing because we didn’t know each other had gotten one. While still trying to collect my nerves I heard the second buck grunting and spotted the doe he was chasing first and then I saw him. I quickly realized that I didn’t have another bullet in my gun. Somehow I managed to quietly crack my gun open to reload. Please know I shot the first one at 0759 and pulled the trigger the second time at 0804! When I sent him the text that said make that 2 BBD we finally realized that we had both shot deer. Holy Smokes! What just happened is all I could think!
My brother came to meet me and we celebrated our harvests with several laughs and hugs in the woods! I am so thankful to have him as my big brother for several reasons, but yesterday I was so grateful. I definitely owe him a beer for dragging both of my deer 400+ yards through the thick woods to the field.
We finally made it to his deer after getting mine loaded. We still couldn’t believe what happened. When we got to the house we told our mom happy birthday and I think she will even admit it was a great birthday present to see her happy kids!
