Walking out in the morning my buddy got turned around in the woods and couldn’t find his blind on the other side of a patch of woods from where I was. He waited until sunrise then decided he had scared away everything in the area so he headed in. Shortly after he began walking he kicked up two bucks. I heard a deer crashing through the woods at the same time my phone was buzzing from him telling me it was headed my way. I could tell it was a bigger buck than any I had seen so far this season but it was running full speed through the woods and headed on a path right behind me. I had about 5 seconds to re-position so I could have a shot. As he came broadside to me I yelled at him to get him to stop and he ignored me. I then shouted very loud at him and he noticed me and stopped with his knees bent like he was about to bolt. I raised my bow and fired off a quick shot at about 30 yards. He trotted off as if nothing had happened and I was worried that with everything happening so fast I had missed. I have him a few hours to be safe before tracking. I thought I had hit him dead center but didn’t allow myself to hope until I found the bolt that had passed through him and buried into the ground up the the fletching. There was blood with bubbles all the way down the shaft, an obvious lung shot. Once I found the trail there was constant blood and it was apparent that he would not be far. He dropped about 80 yards into the woods and as I approached him I saw that what I thought was a decent 6 point was actually a large 8 point. Usually when I see a buck I start shaking like a leaf. This guy did not give me time to get in my own head. I reacted on instinct and it paid off.
