It was a winter day between Christmas and New Years. Benaiah, Dad, and I decided to go small game hunting. First we practiced shooting the gun and how to handle it safely. Soon we were ready to go. We went down to my great grandmother’s property on Oaks Road and parked the truck on the side of the road.
To have a good chance of shooting an animal, you have to walk quietly and keep your eyes peeled. We had to walk over a hill before getting into the woods. I was excited to go hunting and I was wondering what we might find. I knew that we might find squirrels or a rabbit. I was hoping for a squirrel.
After we had walked for a bit we saw a rabbit, but unfortunately the first time, it got away before Dad could aim at it. A little bit later we saw it again, but it was running away from us again!
We kept our eyes on it, and Dad got the 22 ready. Suddenly it turned to look at us, and BOOM! We got him! I felt so excited at that moment. My heart was beating fast. I couldn’t believe we got him! We went to the rabbit and picked it up. I felt proud to have such a cool dad.
After walking some more Dad found a deer trail, and after following it for a while Dad decided it was time to go back to the truck and take the rabbit home to show Mom.
At home Dad skinned the rabbit, cleaned it up, and went inside to cook it up. It was a delicious dinner!
I had a great time hunting!
