It was a warm, slow evening with no activity despite the ideal conditions and calm weather. About 15 minutes before dark, I had finally relaxed, not expecting anything to happen.
Then two does wandered into the field.
About two minutes later, I heard a rustle behind me and to my left. Out walked a buck. At first glance, I thought it was the younger, pesky 7-point I routinely see in the evenings. But as soon as he stepped into view, I realized it was one of the nicer bucks we had been watching.
He was unsure of me and, at one point, started to turn and leave. That’s when I adjusted and prepared for the shot. Thankfully, he ultimately walked into the field with the does and presented me with a perfect broadside shot at 20 yards.
I took it.
He ran about 60 yards before dropping.
What an incredible way to end a slow evening!
Shoutout to my daughter, Madison, for all her help in the field.
