I’m a professional butcher and novice hunter that sometimes gets lucky! On December 1st at 5:36 PM, I accomplished a long-awaited goal: harvesting my first deer with a crossbow. The buck was standing 16 yards away when I lined up the shot, steadying my aim and releasing the bolt. It struck perfectly, hitting both the heart and lungs— a clean, ethical shot. The deer took off, running about 50 yards before dropping.
Watching it fall so quickly gave me a sense of relief and pride, knowing I had done everything right in preparation for this moment.
