Opening morning of rifle I sat alone in my grandpa’s shack. It has been a long bow season and I had passed a lot of smaller bucks that I didn’t want to shoot. We had no idea that he was near the property, but many neighbors had shot big deer. Around 9 am I was packing my things up to get ready to leave when I looked out of the window behind me. He was standing about 40 yards away at the edge of the field looking into the woods. He was perfectly broadside. I grabbed my gun and put it on the windowsill thinking he’d see me for sure. I saw his shoulder in my crosshairs and fired. He kicked and jumped into the brush. I called my dad and sister right away. We found grandpa and tracked his 8 point then tracked mine. He was about 40 yards from where I shot him. He’s my first wall hanger and the first deer I gutted on my own. I can’t wait for another opportunity like this!
