Opening day this season I was going to introduce a family friends son to the sport. As we set out in the morning I was not trying to get a monster buck, but simply trying to ensure we harvested a deer for the full experience of opening day and the thrill of the hunt. Sunrise came and shots rang out all around us, Malachi and myself were just relaxing and keeping a watchful eye on the surroundings. Shortly after sunrise a young buck ran thru the property and really caught us off guard. Malachi decided he was going to keep himself entertained with some coloring and breakfast, fruit loops and some uncrustables. I was starting to wonder if we were going to be able to seal the deal on at least a doe the later it got into the morning. But out of no where this really nice 9 point came into view with a doe he was with. I pointed to them so Malachi could watch them. I steadied the gun on my rest to take a shot on this nice buck. I glanced over at Malachi to see his face before the shot. He was smiling from ear to ear, I told him “ok here we go keep your eyes on that buck”. I took the shot and the buck took off tail tucked and then stopped a short distance away. So to make sure he didn’t go far I took one more shot to put him on the ground. Malachi was so pumped but at this point I was not sure who was more excited me or him. I asked him where the doe went and he told me she was still right there. So we were able to harvest her as well all at the same time. This will be one of the most memorable hunts of my life. Besides this experience, the only hunt to compare was my wife’s first season hunting when she harvested a nice 10 point. The older I get I seem to get more joy out of getting others into a sport I love.
