Hunter hunting along a marsh

Information

  • Date Taken: 11/16/2013
  • Time Of Day: Evening
  • Method: Shotgun
  • County: Isabella County
  • Property: Private
  • Dressed Weight: I used a h&r 12ga shotgun with hornady sabots. I have been hunting my entire life, I am 21 years old, and I have never successfully harvested a deer before. My buddy told me that I could sit with him and I could shoot a doe if one decided to come out. Well we get out there and don't see anything for about an hour, all of the sudden I see something in the weeds out of the corner of my eye, it was two does. So I hustle to get my gun up and out the window and they are high tailing it. I couldn't get my gun up in time before they got into the woods. Then I look over 10 seconds later and one of the does is standing in a lane in the woods so I go to get my gun up again but she saw me and took off, had she stood there 3 more seconds I would have shot her. So im kinda bummed but not 20 seconds after she sees me a spike comes walking up the treeline right at us and makes a left for the pine trees behind us, and I'm watching him do his thing and my buddy leans over and say "holy crap" so naturally I want to see what he was looking at and my hear instantly started pounding cause out came this guy from the brush. Im breathing really heavy at this point. I mean I've seen big bucks before but I've never killed a deer before let alone a big buck. But my buddy is reassuring and he calms me down just enough when he steps out that helped me make a great quartering away shot at about 70 yards right through a lung, the heart, and taking out the trachea! I was almost in tears I was so overwhelmed with emotion. We had no problem tracking him and he only went about 40 yards. When we found him I felt like now I was a successful hunter after years and years of not getting one! Truly one of the greatest experiences of my life!
