After a long 4 weeks and countless close calls, we finally caught a break. Upon arrival, this bird was already fired up looking for a hen. My husband and I wanted to make it to the wood line, but quickly realized we wouldn’t make it in time. We sat near the closest apple tree and called maybe twice before this bird was in the field scanning. At 80 yards, we got to see this bird in full strut looking for hens. He locked eyes on our decoy and made his way over slowly. Our decoy was up on a ledge, and he disappeared behind it around 60yds away. After what seemed like forever and wondering if he retreated back to the woods, he came up over the ledge, sun in his eyes, full strut right down the path to our decoy. I got a clean 25 yard shot to harvest my biggest Tom to date. He measured a 12” beard, 1.5” spurs, and 28 pounds.
