Mission accomplished tonight.

Far from the biggest deer I’ve ever killed. In fact it’s the smallest buck I have shot in a couple decades. I’ve passed up many bucks like this over the years. Normally I am a “8 point or better” guy. They walk if I can’t put my restricted tag on them. But tonight, unfortunately for this guy, my rules were different. This buck is special. I needed to take him to complete my mission.

I’ve been deer hunting since I was 14. 48 years of deer hunting. For most of the first 20 of those, I almost never hunted deer without my dad. Over the years I have hunted all over the world literally, but almost every year managed to have a deer hunt with my dad.

My dad died in August and this is the first gun season I have ever had without my dad at least being in the picture to talk about what we saw and got.

My dad like most hunters enjoyed shooting a nice deer with a big rack, but honestly, that took a backseat to him. Mainly he just wanted to have some venison. Every deer was a “good deer” to my dad, because they all meant he got to have venison tenderloins, and round steak and venison jerky and venison salami and venison chili and best of all…his favorite venison hunter sticks from Ebels in Falmouth.

It just seemed different having rifle deer season come around and having no discussion with my dad about deer hunting.

My first memories of deer hunting always included my dad with his Remington 760 Game Master pump 30-06. It was and is a beautiful gun…a classic in the deer hunting world.

Tonight I carried that gun to one of the hunting blinds on the property I share with my son. Despite the fact that I own many rifles, I took his out so I could honor my dad. I hoped I could shoot a deer with it and put some venison in the freezer just like he would have. I had never hunted with this gun before tonight.

This six pointer sacrificed his life so that I could complete my mission. 1 sit…1 buck. Can’t do much better than that.

This one’s for you dad. Hopefully your hunting grounds in heaven are filled with deer!
