Took my Father in law out to hunt in hopes we had some action in the afternoon, he’s been out numerous times elsewhere and had not been successful so I was really crossing my fingers to line up a good hunt, so I put him in the hot seat.
After about an hour we had 4 does across the corn field working their way to the middle of the field right between us but they spooked and took off. So I was biting my nails as 5pm was approaching hoping something would come back. I saw a doe come out in front of him, saw him and she took off and I’m thinking “man, I really set him up for failure today” and started getting discouraged for him. When a few minutes later I hear BOOM and a deer running full send right passed me at about 150 yards, so I pull up on it and it darts to its left away from me and piles up! Success! I get a text ” Is he down?” And I am thinking “OK Luke Bryan give it a minute” because he was so excited and I wasn’t sure how good of a hit it was as I thought I saw it’s head pick up at dusk, so we waited an hour and began tracking and could not find blood for the longest time until we walked where we thought the deer traveled from where I saw it from my stand running and GOOD BLOOD. Shot at 50 yards with the shotgun and ran less than 100 yards and there he laid. He Hasn’t shot a buck in 20 years and this was the biggest buck to date and I breathed a sigh of RELIEF I could put him on a good spot and watched it all unfold!
