Two good friends and I loaded up and hit trail into some public land we had been scouting for the prior couple weeks. Just before shooting light, we came to a clearing within some thick old growth woods that we had our eyes on. Before we even had a chance to set up, a very fired up Tom started gobbling within the woods on the far side of the clearing out of sight. Moving quickly, we set some decoys in the middle of the clearing and set up beneath thick oaks on our side of the clearing just at the edge, and I started working the mouth call. Immediately he was on the call, returning every call with a gobble louder than the last. Within 60 seconds of getting set he emerged from the far edge of the woods in full fan, heading straight for the decoys. As he got within shooting distance in my sight line, he suddenly made a sharp turn to his left, doing a little dance with his tail feathers going in and out of full fan. This left turn put him behind some brush in my sight line, and as my heart was pounding out of my chest I had to take my own pulse and give him time. Coaxing him with occasional yelps as he wavered on my right edge as if debating on whether to bail or not, he finally hit back with a strong gobble and made his way back at the decoys and right in front of my bead.
